A friend of mine says he never redesigns an old website because he might lose his rankings. And he usually gets good rankings for his websites. Is that a good policy? I think there is something to it, but even if your website has great rankings, it could have lousy sales. And what good is a website ranked at No. 1 that isn't converting?

Google image search made toggling the SafeSearch option a tiny bit easier, by including the settings switch menu right on the results page (instead of linking to the settings page, where one has to toggle a radio button option and hit a save button).* SafeSearch is Google's adult content filter that can be turned off in most countries, though interestingly enough not in (at least) Google China. *I believe this is rather new, but don't know when exactly it was added.

Bing has finally arrived 3-5 years behind Google, who is talking about robots.txt and rel="canonical" attributes these days. Bing is discussing what Google was discussing in 2005 . That doesn't mean it isn't worth talking about. A refresher is always in order. It's just interesting that SEO and site architecture are at the forefront of Bing's new discussion with searchers right after its big splash .

One of the advantages of working at Google is that you get to see neat products and features before the rest of the world does. But that can also be a disadvantage. Sometimes I'd like to talk about a fun Gmail Lab or a new Calendar feature but I'm honestly not sure whether the outside world can see the new feature. I don't want to leak something that the outside world can't see, so I usually I play it safe and end up not talking about any Gmail Labs, for example.

There's no rest for the large and in charge. While some of us were whisking off to our Independence Day weekend getaways, Google boosted its blog, book and mobile search offerings to start off July with a bang. First, the new Google Blog Search has gotten a touch of the Twitter treatment with the Hot Queries and Latest Posts features. Google says these tools are intended to let users "better help you discover what people are talking about right now on the Web.
